Choices

Olympic Game host countries make an offer to host the Olympic Games through a bidding process organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The process usually begins several years before the scheduled date of the Games, with cities expressing interest in hosting the event by submitting a letter of application.

After the letter of application, the interested cities will submit a detailed bid file. This bid file includes information on the city’s infrastructure, venues, transportation, accommodation, security, and other logistical arrangements. Their application will then be evaluated, and a shortlist of candidate cities will be created.

The process is not without controversy.  Sometimes due to financial burden and over promise, and also for environmental and social impact, cities have withdrawn their bid or failed to be selected as the host city. Budapest withdrew their 2024 bid as it was claimed the money spent on the Olympics would be better spent on education, healthcare, housing, living standards and transport.

Germany, India and Australia put bids in for the 2032 Olympic Games and it was rewarded to Brisbane because of its sustainability, economic potential and its strong cultural diversity. The Prime Minister hailed the result as a historic decision and the win for the entire nation.
